Is there a period where there is a marked change in style within Japanese art? I feel like japanese paintings suddenly gained a lot of depth after the 16th century. They must've been influenced by western paintings and techniques on perspective and color. It's interesting to see how techniques from both cultures mix and produce something new.

Drawing depth and shadow arent always a better way for this kind of ukiyoe and some art styles, especially anime/cartoon/graffiti style art, because instead of the way they can get and try other ways to draw like the shiny brightness on this. I prefer darker and atmospheric art getting a lot of shadows and depths but also like these shiny art.

While European artists regarded that to be realistic is to draw the accurate look of things, many Japanese drawers thought the accurate mood, or accurate impression of things is the reality.
We don't perceive the word as the sets of meaningless particles. We emphasize the some objects or ignore others.

Akita school tried to draw the world reconstructed by our perception(1775)

>>
>>57472120
you are right.
European had many techniques to draw realistic works.
In fact, Asia and Europe had already been tied in 16th century and many technologies and researches were communicated.
Sadly, our ancestors take European realism valueless, and didn't adopt it.
As You can see, paintings by Alita School have airs of European drawings.
But these skills were forgotten only 20 years later because their successors found this style not so attractive.

We had a chance to learn Europeans' advanced skills, and learnt once, and got rid of it.
Our different preferences explain this well than the lack of skills, i think

This might sound like high autism, but I kinda figured a few stuff out. Basically, at the end of the day, things that can not be proven in a controlled environment (like a lab) using scientific method, those things are literally not even worth discussing. Those things can spiral into an infinite 'no u' discussion (if that even is an discussion). If there are no objective, absolute (I know everything is relative, but lets treat SI system as a system of absolutes for the purpose of this), measurable things, than literally no one can be right, not objectively at least.

tl;dr
no proofs = bullshit

This post is a philosophical disaster. You tried, at least, I don't want to put you down for no reason.
>>

>philosophy
lel, philosophy is bullshit. Ask an actual intellectual about something, and he will say "its because [proofs]". As a quasi-intellectual (a philosopher, an artist) something, and he will say "its because I said so!".

Hence why all of philosophy is basically completely useless. If all philosophers in the world died, literally nothing would happen. If all medical doctors, engineers, chemists, physicists, etc etc died, the world would be basically returned to a pre-rock tools age.

Philosophers produce nothing, and they are worth nothing.

You mean like math? Or engineering? Or physics? Lad, those things already have a name. And people who do these things dont go around calling themselves philosophers.

Philosophy and art do not have a licence. You dont need a licence to practice art, or philosophy. Which is why being a philosophy/art/something else without a licence major at a university, it just means you are a complete fucking retard. In ideal world, these people would get Darwin'd out of economy, but we still keep them around for some (not economical, not useful) reason.

Ukiyoe is a poster art.
every corner of cities were covered with ukiyoe poster in our 1800's
many ukiyoe were written as a advertising poster of kabuki.
Kabuki is something like musical or opera.

That's not iron age at all. They're dressed like people from the edo period. Also there were guns and cannons, and they were heavily used, although they're not present in that picture. Even after adopting gunpowder warfare (in the sengoku period -- there was no warfare in the edo period because the guy who started it was just that good at unifying and turned the country into a completely unified isolationist state) the samurai still wore swords as a mark of their caste.

Yeah but I meant armor. I associate armor with iron age because it was effective back than. People quickly throw armor away in gunpowder age simply because it was heavy, expensive, inefficient in every way.

So its weird to me, that people who have some of the most advanced economies today do a really backward thing just 200 years ago.
>>
>>57473831
After the catastrophic civil war with 500,000 guns in 15th century, Japan promulgated very strict gun-control law in 1588.
In edo-period, only hunters had guns and only samurai had the swords.
Police officers and samurais in usual time used sticks and sasumata instead of swords and guns

The Japanese made bullet-resistant armor which meant that they could keep wearing armor in warfare. The same happened in Europe but the difference was that Europeans developed more effective weapons faster than armor technology could keep up so they abandoned armor. Meanwhile, Japan's firearm technology had stagnated so they kept using outdated arquebuses and matchlocks from the Portuguese, which could not reliably pierce armor unless it's shot from a close distance.

The artist addresses the viewer in the language of emotions. When the viewer learns that certain people have given one little queer fifteen million pounds to stretch out a huge imitation-leather cunt above an abandoned soccer pitch, he remembers what he does in his own life and how much he is paid for it, then he looks at the photo of this little queer in his horn-rimmed spectacles andfunny jacket, and experiences confusion and bewilderment bordering on the feeling that the German philosopher Martin Heidegger called ‘abandonment’ (Geworfenheit). The viewer is invited to concentrate on these feelings, which constitute the precise aesthetic effect that the installation attempts to achieve.

I guess I would go for the employment rates. Arts and philosophy majors are some of the least employable people globally. And most of their jobs are also unessential.
Meanwhile, useful people (medical doctors, engineers, etc etc) have extremely high employability, and also very high starting salaries.

Dont know if this is enough for you to accept as proofs. I defined worth in this case as employment rates (in the field), starting salaries, and how essential you are to your job (meaning when they start the budget cuts, you remain).

From a purely economical viewpoint, they are much less useful.. as a hobby, its as good as any I guess.
