Everyone from the sultan to the journalists treated us Finns as dear northern relatives of the Turks, whom they met again after separation lasting for thousands of years." This despite the fact that officially Finland, as an ex-grand duchy of Russia, was still at war with Turkey.

That said, there are a few nutjobs who believe in strange theories. I mean, they do have some munition, like how Turkish is also agglutinating language with similar cases, common shared, basic words such as mother (anya) (anne, ana), so I don't know.
I personally think Finno-Ugric is a real thing, but the similarity between Turkish langues and Finno-Ugric cannot be denied. I think it'd make tons of sense that the two familes are related, like Indo-Europeans, though because of so much time had passed now it's difficult to prove it.
