Nevertheless, that can be said about other countries as well. France is not the only Western democracy still standing, and I don't think that we can give lessons to the world the way we did during the 20th century.
The problem is the concept of Identity, protecting the universal human goods you're speaking about is of the utmost importance. But some people are so chauvinist that they forget that there are good things all over the world, not only in France.
And I acknowledge the posterity, I just try not to forget that France is not the centre of the universe.

For example, my brother is a real piece of work. He's shit, really - but I'd do anything for him, and value him above other people - many of whom are 'superior' to him in a variety of ways.

Being 'French' could be a locus of social and interpersonal power for the individual. It could increase or create the sense of responsibility and purpose that you clearly have been divested of. Personally, I'm not a nationalist, but in my mind I can simulate this kind of nationalism and sense of purpose, and it feels good.

Fun facts if you ever visit:
Never take a taxi in Jo'burg. They're run by gangs and regularly are victims of driveby shootings for infringing on other taxi's turf. They shoot everyone inside, the driver, patrons etc.
Never walk around Downtown Jo'burg, you will probably get mugged. And if you enter certain areas you may even get killed.
If you ever face a situation in which a potential kidnapper is trying to get you into a car, you have more chance of surviving by doing anything other than getting in the car (running away, fighting them etc). If you get in the car you will die.
Basically stay out of Jo'burg, it's an ugly violent shithole with nothing redeeming about it. Cape Town is beautiful and worth a visit, but the real beauty of South Africa is in it's countryside and National Parks. I'd like to go again some day.
