How useful is the vocabulary in the Genki series? I'm early on in Japanese and just now starting to learn grammar rules and some extended vocabulary and I'm using Genki because a lot of people recommend it.
In my experience with language textbooks I find that the vocabulary is pretty general and I feel like I'd be better off basically using Genki to learn grammar concepts and to steal example sentences so I can build my own sentences with targeted vocabulary from a frequency dictionary and then test myself with those sentences.
I feel like I could blaze through the book this way and learn more functional vocabulary (if you learn the 1000 most common words of the language you will reach a comprehension of 70% of common spoken words).
Does this sound like a reasonable approach?

I guess. I've also had people who tell me to do all the exercises and stuff but it seems more time effective to steal example sentences and use it to guide my own independent study rather than religiously work through every example and every workbook problem.
I guess I was pitching a question to see if I'm missing anything by breezing through the book and kind of doing my own thing with the info it gives me.

Japanese consists of two ethnic groups as a whole.
Jomon and Yayoi. Jomon are the first people came to the islands more than 10,000 years ago. It's believed that they didn't have the concept of rice farming until Yayoi period.
Yayoi are considered to be southern chinese who moved to Japan around 3,000 years ago, they belonged to the Yangtze River Civilization and brought rice farming to Japan. some people might deem otherwise though.
Basically most of Japanese are a mix of Jomon and Yayoi. based on a genetic research, the more you go away from Kyoto, the stronger Jomon blood becomes.
But Ainu never made a contact with Yayoi due to separation from the main island.
They have the purest Jomon genes along with Okinawan.

Salmon, avocado and mayo are all highly fatty ingredients with soft, squishy textures. When put together, they don't contrast and play off each other's flavours like good sushi does, they just turn into an indistinguishable gooey mush as soon as you bite into it. Personally I prefer simple and fresh sushi sourced from wild fish, of course it's a little more expensive but it's worth it.
