Southern Italy is trying to specialize in high tech industry, yes, but there are not a lot. It's not a bad idea. Here in Catania they were opening a lot of them some years ago (they even started calling it "Etna Valley"), then the economic crisis hit hard and most of them failed. Since the multinational that started everything, STMicroelectronics, is still here, it's not unlikely that there will be one more attempt.
