To all you non native English speakers, does English sound more Germanic or more French/Latin?
>>
A mix of all of them.
>>
It has Germanic grammar with Latin loanwords.
>>
>>57410224
Yeah but what does it sound like when listening to it?
>>57410206
That's what I was thinking, but no side particularly stands out to you?
>>
>>57410145
Neither, specially the american accent
British sounds slightly germanic for me though
>>
scandinavian
>>
Sounds like french with a bad pronounciation.
>>
>>57410145
Can't really say it is one or another, rather sounds like the perfect combination of Germanic and Romance
>>
>>57410224
>>57410409
That is basically what English is. The most commonly used words are Germanic, and when learning the language children learn the Germanic words first because of the grammatical structure. The older you get the more Romance words come into play to expand your vocabulary.

A Brit will sound more Germanic than the average American

>>
>>57410592
Well I'm not sure how English sounds to non-native speakers to be honest.
>>
>>57410592
And scandinavian sounds Germanic
>>
>>57410592
Not really.

I was in Norway and their language sounds nothing like English.
>>
>>57410145
Germanic.
>>
What is Germanic supposed to sound like anyway?
>>
>>57410145
Like French but without choking on cock
>>
>>57410145

Sounds like a language of the Island that was raped by everyone for centuries, hence the fucked-up language with tongue breaker pronounciation.
>>

Seriously, it sounds just like Welsh or Cornish

Grammar and vocabulary seems Frisian, so Germanic.

Cornish seems more similar but yeah, it always gets me when people says English is just basically German with a bit of French and Latin.

There is a significant Anglo Saxon influence, many of the words are Anglo Saxon in origin, it's always passed around like some mongrel meme language but it had its own sovereign roots and influences.
>>
>>57410145
Neither germanique, neither latin. It was for me a surprise that enugurisu belongs to the germanique language branch
>>
>>57415771
>English sounds like Welsh

Bollocks.
>>
>>57410145
It sounds unique.
>>
>>57415771
>>57415837
You sure they're not just speaking Welsh/Cornish with their English accents?

The Frisian here sounds closer to Irish or American English than RP, so I'm surprised most people think American English sounds less Germanic:

You sure they're not just speaking Welsh/Cornish with their English accents?
They obviously are, but I can't help but think it's the reverse. English speakers using a Britonic substratum in their pronunciation.

This video always makes me laugh

I wonder what percentage Shakespeare would be at, he rejigged or created lots of words we use today
>>
Doesn't sound Scandinavian at all to me, it's nothing like Swedish. And it doesn't sound like French either, that's why we have a strong accent it's hard to have the same pronunciation.
>>
>>57416276
Old English is lovely sounding.

Fucking this.

I studied a bit of Spanish and English doesn't sound like anything to me. English is full of words that are pronounced in ways that are far from intuitive IMO.
>>
>>57410145
English is Norse + French.
Not German + French.

>>
