It's when Chinese tourists go to Paris expecting it to be like it was in the early 20th century.
People drinking wine and eating fancy cheese the smell of fresh baguettes wafting through the air mimes miming on every corner etc.
Then they get there and realize it's a shithole with more muslims than humans and the only smell wafting through the air is shit and they literally lose their minds.

that's the after-effect but the main one is overwhelmed by culture shock, it is so far from expectations that your it trenscends your version of reality
expectation being crushed is manageable eiffle tower is not so tall, glass pyramid not so shiny etc but then the smell and the dark color is what most of what you will be seeing it can quickly turn less than expectation into full dislocation of reality so they get physically sick or extremely stressed
