8. Even though the nobles of many kingdoms west of the rhine spoke french, their people spoke Germanic languages for a long time
9. People in Alsace STILL speak German

I'm an American who ancestors came from Bayern, Mannheim, Scotland, and England.

I can trace many Deutsch/Nederlander ancestors back, but as you can see, I'm mostly English/scottish/Irish. most of my genetic material comes from groups of people who settled the American South in the late 1700s/early 1800s. Most of those are impossible trace back even 200 years or more, because they were degenerate farmers too stupid to make it in colonial Virginia/Carolina.
Also, whenever you hear someone claiming they have native American blood, it's probably not true. Not only could it never be identified if it is more than 4 generations back and only one individual, most people are making up stories or re-telling lies their parents/grandparents/great parents made up.

I am working on getting the papers from my Bayerische ancestors, they didn't come to the US until the late 1800s. I met their daughter and was babysat by their granddaughter as a kid. Despite how little they contributed ethnically to me, they're the immigrants I feel the closest to in many ways.

What am I burying? I think you're confused. What I'm saying is that Americans should be more proud that we have a distinct history from Europe. Europe was pretty terrible to live in for much of the past few centuries until the last 100 years or so.

Nearest city Mainz admittedly isn't a very beautiful city (got heavily bombed and then "rebuilt" with fugly 50s/60s excuse for architecture), but just across the Rhine there's Wiesbaden which looks much nicer (lots of charming early 1900s era villas, also a much more intact city centre)
