When I was in Italy, I wanted to start conversations with an enthusiastic buongiorno, like when I was in France I said bonjour to everyone first before continuing with English.
But in Italy people often just started rapidly speaking in Italian, assuming I was one of them.
Needless to say I quickly stopped with this habit. That said, I really liked Italians. Very friendly.
