Our military branches are simply better equipped and trained than Switzerland, Czech Republic and Ukraine. Norway is about the same but lacks any power projection and doesn't have the layered air defense and navy we have. Sweden does have the numerical advantage when it comes to equipment but due to their military–industrial complex it's not the newest Western stuff.

It's good they are going public about this, it will pressure the government and it will create more public and political support to the cause. Our defense budget has recently been going up again actually, but it's just on a small scale. Even Hennis said there should be at least €2bn more added to the defense budget in the upcoming years. It's mostly needed to invest in new weapon systems, IT and start the replacement projects on our submarines and other naval vessels.

The Japanese actually have a fairly powerful military if you accept that most of the emphasis should be on the navy. Their strategic situation is similar to the UK in that respect.
The big difference is that while the UK spreads its resources thin around the world, Japan concentrates everything in its local region and doesn't do much away from home. Also the Japanese don't have any SSNs which is a severe limitation to naval operations - if you don't have SSNs it basically means you can't go after an enemy navy, as diesel-electric submarines are too slow for hunting most surface fleet ships. It means you are purely defensive.
