In my experience, it can go either way. I work on a farm, so I normally leave my boots outside, or just stand at the door and politely decline when they offer to let me in if it's a short visit.

I think it's really cute how techs from the cable/ internet companies have started to wear bag booties over their work boots. Last time I saw one of these guys he was driving a tiny little Transit Connect and he even had a little orange cone to stick in the front of his truck even though it was totally unneeded. Dude was like 6'5'' and probably 275 lbs.
