Stockholm has about one million citizens, and I think it's small. The only 'real' district left is the old town anyway, because our government, the social democrats, tore down most of the old city from the imperial era in the name of 'sanitation' in the 60's. They managed to construct a soulless and efficient city in its wake, but still they did not huddle the buildings together to make it feel big. It feels like small, depressing villages of commie blocks, void of soul, stretched thinly. They castrated the city. If you can even call it that any more.

Small (to be honest).

My city (160 275) is the largest place for hours in any direction, but it's not a "big city" by any means.

Why are Old World cities always so small (outside of capitals)?

>Why are Old World cities always so small (outside of capitals)?
Iceland has an excuse to be small. Since settlement our population was always around 20k up to maybe 50 - 60k. We didn't reach 100k population overall until well after 1900. We were also one of the poorest nations of Europe up until the 1930s.

Not them, but how about you fuck off, buddy.

THIS is what Iqaluit looks like. It is the largest "city" in Nunavut, and it's nothing but a bunch of strewn about trailer homes on a hill. Nunavut is an absolute shithole.

Now, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon aren't much better, but they're worlds better than the failed experiment that is a Native territory.
>>
>>57291871
Probably because of different laws concerning expansion of cities or something, all big cities in Europe grew to the boundaries of smaller towns and became an urban continuum with them, but the small towns still kept their autonomy because muh histry, muh parish (at least in Italy), if you look at metro areas Europe has some very big ones.

What's Iceland's economy like right now? I heard that Iceland is a popular place for aluminum smelting because of its cheap geothermal energy, so I imagine there's a good industry for it there. Also the country being nearly energy-independent looks promising.

Okay? Canada has 10 (excluding the largest, Toronto).

I get that we have more land, but most cities are pretty dense as far as population goes, and could easily fit into the UK in place of your top cities without taking up much more land.

Old Worlders don't seem do a lot of building up (because you have to hang on to the "muh heritage" shacks), but didn't the Germans clear out a lot of the old buildings for you? Why didn't everywhere just start building high-density?

To be fair, Ottawa is the capital. We don't have a separate "state" for ours like you do (DC), and so the capital's boundaries extend pretty far. The actual city is pretty small, though.

Sudbury is a whole region on it's own. The city proper is actually pretty small, and "Greater Sudbury" includes Sudbury, Copper Cliff, Val Therese, Val Carnon, Falconbridge, and a fuckload more of the outlying towns. Not sure why they were merged.

I have no idea what's going on with Halifax, though.

But Ottawa (city proper) is about the same size as DC, the city borders just include all this empty area (used sat to show where the city actually is, painted the city's official borders).

They might, I think it's both the highest grossing and the most expensive TV show made in Iceland. The media here wouldn't shut up for weeks how popular it became in the UK and France. I think recall some US company also buying the rights to show it over there soon.
I don't really know what Baltasar Kormákur decides to do, he's sometimes weird about his projects. He also directed that movie Everest that came out last year, in case you want to see more of his work.

I live in a city of ~700K, but would often visit the farm of my friend's grandfather during the summer. We'd go hunting, camping, fishing, etc.

I so badly want to move to a small town. City life is too fast and impersonal.

I'm thinking the east coast would be a good fit for me.

With money I earn from my job. If you don't spend a lot of money on things you don't really need, you'll see yourself saving a ton. I could afford a 2016 car, if I wanted to, but drive a 2002. I don't party often or waste big bucks on booze. I still have an Xbox 360 and don't buy new electronics, like phones or computers, until my old ones die.

I use my money for traveling and will keep doing so even after I finish grad school.

And yeah, I travel alone. I love traveling alone; no fucking way I'd want to take an extended trip with even my girlfriend.

Reykjavik is probably not a good city to live in. The bad thing about Iceland is that everything relies on cars. They actually have the opportunity to make a really nice city, but cars at high speed in every street makes it really shitty, and also causes poor city planning. They could with some really simple changes make it one of the greatest cities on earth, but as it is now it's an American shithole.

Icelanders are just kind of autistic and have zero social skills. They're extremely awkward. I'm not saying they're bad people, by any means, but it was not a very vibrant country.

Nightlife in Reykjavik is very mediocre. There's one street in the city where all the bars, although I can't remember the name. People do party and party hard on Fridays and Saturdays, but if you've ever been to South America or the Balkans or even Thailand, Iceland is nothing.

>>57297394

You can meet other Brits and Westerners in hostels, which is what the vast majority of young people do versus actually going out and taking the time to meet locals.

Eh. I don't like hostels very much. For one - and as meme-y as this might sound - I do prefer to meet local people when I travel. No point in going different places if I'm just going to hang out with a pack of Aussies, Brits, and other Americans. However, they do provide cheap and often comfortable accommodation for low rates.

The main reason I don't like hostels is that people are annoying as shit. I've never had anything stolen, but I can't tell you how many times a Pierre or Francois has stumbled back into a dorm at 3am, flicked on all the lights, and started yelling in Frog to his relatives over Skype. Basically, you just get a lot of drunk and annoying young adults who don't respect the people around them and act like they're the only people in the hostel.
>>
>>57297651

This.

The only TWO times I travelled I never met a single foreigner except one American in Ireland but he had been living there for a while, was still called Matt the Yank by the locals though, he had a cool place in some woody area full of curios, kinda nice. But I digress. Once I lived with a host family (was doing volunteer work on a farm) and the other I lived with a local girl.

The Gezi Park protests were pretty intense. I was staying five minutes away from Taksim for the first week or two. I've never seen so many angry people in one place.

Was awesome after the Turks kicked out the police, though. People were drinking in the streets for days on end. The Occupy Gezi Park people set up a library, hospital, and had concerts almost every night.

>>57297579

Craziest sounding is Iraq, but it wasn't very dangerous when I went. Funnest was probably Colombia. I've also enjoyed India (been there five times and lived there) a lot. Serbian nightlife was outstanding.

I've honestly liked everywhere I've been, even Reykjavik. The only major letdown I had was Athens, which is just an awful concrete jungle with a few nice antiques scattered on hills here and there.
>>

>>
>>57297788
I didn't go until a couple of years ago after the protests. But the atmosphere in some areas were tense though. At all areas protests were expected the police had their water cannon lorries ready, and if too many people would gather, suddenly buses of riot police would be standing around.

I went there last year, about a year after the protests. Took a walk down to Gezi Park so I could see how things changed, since they weren't letting anyone in by the time I left Turkey in 2013. The park was peaceful and nice, DESU, except for all the gay Turks and Syrians who hit on me.

Istanbul is probably the most gay city I've ever been to.
