There is no such thing as "general perception", it depends on your political background. If you're a real lefty, they're the devil. If you're center/right they're dumb rivals. Else you probably like them.

I'd say they're gaining more and more voters, though I haven't followed politics much lately. Hollande's constant fuck-ups and Sarkozy being again in trouble with justice helps the FN to get more voters. Other potential candidates for the right wing are generally unappealing and keep fighting each other.
