He was trying weed the second time in his life. According to him, weed is very difficult to obtain in all Japan and is considered a hard drug in the same level as cocaine and heroin. He said almost nobody smoked marijuana there since it was almost impossible to obtain and the japanese in general are not really into weed since it's seen as a degenerate drug. Funny because all japs I met drank alcohol till they dropped on the floor and acted like that was normal.

I did it a couple times many years ago (a few times on a class trip to Holland and a few times spread over several months thereafter) but eventually decided it just doesn't do it for me. Also both parents have at one point admitted they did it once or twice too in the 80s, and we're definitely not from poor background, rather solid middle to upper middle class villagers

I smoked weed I bought from a bar owner in Okayama. I got so fucking high that I spent around 25,000 yen on a taxi trying to get good munchies, but there was a language barrier and the taxi driver kept taking me to gas stations.
Also I was smoking a joint in front of my hotel and three Japanese students smelled it and said it smells nice and they hung around trying to inhale. The beta Jap guy wandered off and the two girls asked in pretty good English if I was high. I said he'll yeah and they laughed. Then the pretty Jap girl ran off in the same direction as the beta Jap guy. When they both left the Jap girl, her name is Misaki, felt more comfortable. She asked me to blow the smoke directly into her face. I did. So I got her really high and asked if she wanted to hang out. She said no and asked if I can give her weed. I told her we aren't friends. She laughed and said we can be friends. She didn't have Facebook or anything I had so I just showed her my hotel room and told her to meet me the next day to get high again. We did this for a week straight until she stopped coming when I fingered her.
