Greenlandic has one loanword from Siberian Chuckchi, the word "uligiilik", which is derived from the Chuckchi word for birch: velgil. In Greenlandic the word is a name for loose brittle driftwood (aspen). In some areas this wood was also called "arnat qisuat" (womens wood) since it couldn't be used for anything else than fuel and as cork for bottles.

The Greenlandic girls name, "Kuuna", is believed to be a loanword from the Norse Vikings, "kona", which means 'woman'? This word was again used at a later date in the European-Greenlandic pidgin language, which was spoken while trading with whalers.

The word was first written down in 1654 as "Kona: Agnak" (woman) in the Danish historian, Peder Hansen Resen's German-Greenlandic wordlist. The name is believed to have been commonly used in Southern Greenland, but has since spread to both Central Western and Northern Greenland.

Derivates of this name is found in old church registers as "Kona" and "Konánguak" (dear girl) in Paamiut around 1773. as "Konalik" ("Kuunalik"; 'equipped as a woman') in Qeqertarsuaq in 1782 and as "Kunelik" ("Kuunalik") in Fredriksdal in 1824. The name 'Gunelle' which can be seen on Salomon von Hauen's painting from Bergen dated 1654 as a name of one of the four captive Greenlanders, is probably a Europeanized transcription of the name "Kuunalik".

It is possible that the girls' name "Konnane" ("Kunnana"), which was written down in Nuuk in 1743 is a derivation of the same name.

Direct translations or loan translations are one of the results of the contact between two or more languages in a community, other results are loanwords and neologisms (new words, terms or phrases).

Translation of phrases which differ in meaning than the words used, can easily be misunderstood when it emerges in a language, but become a part of a language over the years.

Some direct translations into Greenlandic, which were misunderstood in the beginning are: "bussit tiguakka" - I take the bus, "suut tamarmik nipilersoqataapput" - everything plays a part, "inuuneq qernertuinnaananilu qaqortuinnaanngilaq" - life is neither black or white etc.

Several studies show that Greenlanders are generally dissatisfied when calques in Greenalndic appear, but that they are increasingly accepted and thus more common as years go by, studies also show that the younger Greenlandic generation find it easier to accept calques.

The Greenlandic male name "Qunaaq" means handsome, good-looking or attractive, and that the Eastern Greenlandic girls' name, "Qunerseeq", which is derived from the same stem, means the beautiful one.

"Quneqitooq", which means the very sweet or beautiful one, was a name to a woman originally from Uummannaq, but living north of Upernavik in the 1880s.

The word "atuarneq" (to read) didn't exist in the Greenlandic language before the concept was introduced into the Greenlandic consciousness.
When Greenlanders began to learn to read after the missionaries arrived the word atuarneq came into being.

New words (neologisms) which were created after missionaries and whalers arrived were some of the following: suaasat (rice), umiarsuaq (ship), qerititsivik (freezer), amusartoq (drawer), ujalussiaq (thread), qamutilik (cannon) etc.

The Greenland flag was designed by Thue Christiansen and adopted on 21 June 1985. It is called Erfalasorput, which means “our flag”. The red colour is called Aappalaartoq (“red”) and is used both in the Greenland flag and the Danish flag (Dannebrog). The red and white symbolise hundreds of years as part of the Kingdom of Denmark. The circle in the middle represents the sun setting on the horizon and the light and warmth that return at midsummer. The fact that the Greenland flag does not feature a cross shows clearly that the country has a degree of political freedom as well as a close affinity with the other Inuit peoples around the pole.

Approximately 4-5.000 years ago the first Eskimo migration took place and people living in Greenland today are descendents from the last migration (the Thule Culture) which took place around year 800 A.C. The Greenlanders call themselves “Kalaallit” and are an indigenous inuit people: Inuit meaning “human being”. They constitute 85 % of the population while the remaining are primarily Danes. During and after colonial times a proportion of the Inuit intermarried with Europeans, why a lot the Greenlanders today can number Inuit and Europeans among their ancestors.

The prevailing religion in Greenland is Protestantism and Greenland is an independent diocese in the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church with a bishop appointed by Denmark.
However, there are other religions and faiths of beliefs such as the Roman Catholic Church, New Apostolic Church, the Evangelic Ebenezer, Bahá’í's and Jehovas Witnesses.

The only way to travel to Greenland is by airplane, to one of the main gateways: Kangerlussuaq (Sondre Stronfjord) in the West or Narsarsuaq in the South both former American air bases. The flight time is approximately 4-5 hours. There are no roads between the towns on the coast so in order to get around locally you can travel with fixed wing planes, helicopters or by sea. From Nanortalik in the South to Sisimiut in the North-west you can sail the whole year, while travel on the distance from Sisimiut and north starts, at the earliest, in May because of the frozen sea. The ships sail to towns and settlements along the coast and they carry passengers as well as cargo.

The Greenlandic language is a polysynthetic language and belongs to the Eskimo-Aleutic languages. This means that it differs strongly from the Indo-European languages like French, English and German. West Greenlandic is the official language but there are distinct dialects spoken in Eastern and Northern Greenland. Greenland is a bilingual country in which Greenlandic is the main language and Danish is the other. In official context both languages can be used.
