the GDP of India was higher prior to the industrial revolution, because India was better for agriculture (higher outputs, more crops and spices etc) and had natural resources (minerals) that Europe lacked.
Europe however went and did an industrial revolution that propelled it light years ahead of India, by the virtue of human intellect and effort, instead of just being on a piece of land that happened to have precious stones in it and precious spices growing from it.

No they didn't, most of eastern Europe was agricultural for the better part of the entire 20th century, the only places that had major manufacturing capabilities where places like the former Czechoslovakia- which had them before the Soviets took over.
All they did was build commie blocks, a semi-military complex and take shitloads out of the area. Even so the major Balkan region like the former Yugoslavia was independent/allied to the Soviets and largely irrelevant to the Soviet Union.

It may sound like a bit of a sketchy move, considering what good splitting up has done for India in the past, but I think at this point, there's actually a lot more to gain from making smaller entities, rather than sticking with the current system (which is byzantine enough already). That India has a lot of potential goes without saying, doesn't it? But the real issue is governance. Smaller states are easier to govern, and it'd be easier to meet the demands of the people.
