It clearly depends on what the government means by "good purpose" and how corrupt the people giving out the loans are, but how is helping people invest in economically productive endeavours a bad thing? Micro lending and stuff like that has worked wonders for developing countries. If we have halfway competent bankers in charge of the program, the increased economic activity from more successful businesses being enabled that otherwise wouldn't have capital to start would produce enough tax revenue to cover those that default. And who says default has to be an option? You legally can't default on student loans, why not make it the same for this sort of program?

We have a lot of foreign debt because other countries buy our Treasury bonds. Why do they do that? They believe our economy is strong enough and stable enough that we'll be able to pay them back. We benefit because it gives us short term capital to invest in our own economy. Not all debt is the same. However I do agree that borrowing from the social security fund was retarded. We planned ahead and had a surplus for when the baby boomers retire, but then Reagan decided it was fair game to take from that and all the president's that followed (and Congress) went along with it.

I mean, the alternative to government financing is obviously a bank. But banks fucking suck. They charge interest many times what they give you, which is inherently unfair. It's not even like the excessive interest is required for operating expenses. Much of it goes to excess and exorbitance.
Consider: you pay DOUBLE the price on a 30 year, 5% fixed rate mortgage. Literally twice what it's actually worth. Don't get me started on small business and auto loans.
But none of us has an alternative choice for a loan, unless we're fucking loaded. You could argue that banking and interest is a necessary evil, but they're still inherently immoral and unfair. Interest (especially excessive interest) is fundamentally unfair.
Imagine, then, if there was a way to loan people the exact amount of money for a house, and you could ensure that they actually fucking paid their loan (no handouts). You paid *exactly* what the sticker price was. Everyone would be happier and the world would be a less greedy (re: Jewish) better place.

In case you were actually serious the interest is there because the bank is renting you money, they aren't a charity. If the government wanted to give out loans without interest it would need the money from taxpayers, leading to higher taxes. If they wouldn't want to raise taxes, the government would have to either print money leading to inflation, which would make the whole shebang useless, or take loan money from banks, which would again, lead to to going for the taxpayer's pocket.
