Most states either like their flag/don't care. If I had to choose a redesign for my state flag (NY) I would probably choose something like this proposal. It has the state colors (blue and gold) alongside the seal and orange (dutch heritage of New York) in a non-tricolor format (tricolors are gay except for the Dutch and French ones)
Although the current New York state flag's design roots from the revolution so I doubt it would ever be changed.

the only proposal I actually really like is pic related but beyond the state colors I see absolutely no connection to NY what so ever. I guess it would be fine if the CoA was put onto it but otherwise its just worse than the current one regardless, which is actually a pretty good flag.
