What does /int/ know about the Solomon Islands?
shlomo's islands
They're a complete shit hole.
I sailed through the area en route from PNG to Tahiti and we kept guns loaded at all times.

I thought most pacific island nations were shitholes though. What makes this one worse?
Large language diversity
Poor as fuck
Previously a British colony

Are you a sailor? Tell us of your adventures on the high seas.

It varies from medium developed to barely developed. Although things might improve as America and China are fighting over their allegiance by competitively investing in them.

I am indeed. Some off the top of my head:
Hit a whale in a 60ft racing yacht in the middle of the atlantic at night, the whale sounded really pissed off when it surfaced behind us.
Lost our mast 1000nm south of Bermuda. Had to cut it free and spent 3 days under jury rig heading to St Maarten due to wind and current. The swell was side on and the two girls on board were the most sea sick I've ever seen people.
Saw Polar Bears about 50ft from the boat when sailing the Northwest Passage, they are fucking massive btw.
Sailed from New Zealand to Alaska in one go, we crossed the International date line where it intersects the equator.

What happens if you sail into a storm? Big waves are scary.

for you

That sounds like a pretty dank job desu
>>57088110
You try and avoid them by sailing around them, out running them or delaying your travel so they're not in your path.
If you do get caught, you just gotta ride it out. Never been really scared at sea, but by the 36-48 hour mark, big storms get kinda tedious.

I think they used to be owned by krauts before ww1, though I could be wrong

How did you get into sailing? What has been your favorite trip?
>>57088520
Quite literally sometimes heh. Wet weather gear is worth exactly what you pay for it - I spent probably $3K USD on staying as dry as possible.

Both parents were sailors when they lived in Europe, my old man did it professionally. Was always on and around boats growing up, a job on the water was inevitable after I dropped out of law school ha.
Best trips are the ones where there is plenty of breeze, warm weather and no rain! Favourite was probably Hong Kong to New Zealand trying to outrun a Typhoon that was sitting over the Philippines, was wet and wild.
