Most of the "tension" is because of historical reasons (and probably things like Gibraltar).
None of us is a major immigrant group on the other.
Sure, we have about 500k british expats here and about 300k spaniards in your country, if I remember well.
But it's mostly retired people or high-level workers.
Lately, with the crisis, Spaniards of lower class have emigrated to the U.K., but in my experience many of them come back because the country does not meet their expectations (they think that, in the U.K., they could go back to the life they had before the crisis. Instead, they find themselves washing dishes in some restaurant.), and we are still one of the minor groups of immigrants, as far as I'm aware.
The Mexican relationship with Spain reminds me more of Muslim/North-African immigration in both the U.K. and Spain, but without the Islam element, of course.

We do like each other but the difference is the illegal immigrant problem and cartels. They are a big problem because mass illegal immigration actually technically costs the individual states more than its worth but they occupy so much of the manual labor jobs that it would hurt us even more if we got rid of them too quickly. Cartels are bad for obvious reasons.
Our future together probably involves integration into a single political entity (which will really just be another name for peaceful annexation by America) in NAFTA. But until Mexico can get its shit together and stop the illegals from leaving (the flow is apprently significantly slowing so it might already be starting) and build a wall on their southern border to stop the flow of illegals from further southern countries, and as long as the cartels still function, that future of integration will be on hold.
