>What does Japan think about politics outside of Japan? do they care much?
We don't care about politics (expecting things about America's president election) so much.
If you ask someone in Japan about Aussie's president name, almost no one can answer it.
>Also, is it true all you folks are shy?
We are shyer compared to western people. I think it's not only for Japanese, but also for all Asian people. Asian people are shy.
>is it socially acceptable to hug girls or /b/ros in public?
Some people might think it's disgusting, but young Japanese people even hug his/her bf/gf in public.
People basically respect foreign country's customs, so it's totally okay if you hug someone in public in Japan, because people regard you as a foreign person. (On the way around, this is why, it's difficult for foreigners to become "Japanese") There are pros and cons for foreigners in Japan.

Yes. You use them wrong way, so I can't find a topic of your sentence properly.
>お母さんの言は私が太い赤ちゃん居ました。
I can find that 居ました is a verb of your sentence, but I can't find which is a proper topic for "居ました". Because your sentence has 3 words (「お母さんの言 (?)」, 「私が」 and 太い赤ちゃん) that can be a topic of the verb. (You use topic marker twice in one sentence. A word located before "居ました" can be a topic of "居ました" without using topic marker. Therefore, 太い赤ちゃん can be a topic of the sentence.)

Mmm i see. I used は as the topic marker, thus the topic would be "お母さんの言" (Mothers remark, although i am not sure about the remark part because i looked that up in a dictionary).
I intended "居ました" to be acting upon "私が太い赤ちゃん" As to create the relative clause 'i was fat' or as i translated it more literally 'i was the person that was fat'. That is why i used が、 here not as a topic marker but as a subject marker.
I thought you could use the は・が structure in this way because of that relative clause and the fact that が does not act as a topic marker here.

I guess that is true. Almost all fluent speakers of languages learn them not via studying grammar but by listening and reading a lot.
Still, i'd like to have a good grasp of grammar because next to it being useful, i find it very interesting how it is structured, and how the natives use it.

Every sentence needs a verb against its topic marker.
If you make お母さんの発言(Mother's remark) as a topic of a sentence, you need to put a verb for it, but it looks like you didn't put it.
It's not a natural Japanese, but you can say it like "お母さんの発言はありました。"
Next, when you want to modify a sentence "私は太った赤ちゃん (I was a fat baby)" to a clause "お母さんの発言 (Mother's remark", you need to use "という" before "お母さんの発言", which is like:
私は太った赤ちゃんというお母さんの発言はありました。
This sentence isn't natural at all, but it's grammatically correct.
Again, when you want to modify a word with sentence, you need to use という.
-あの鳥は赤い
-話
あの鳥は赤いという話は面白かった。
-4ちゃんは面白い
-嘘
4ちゃんは面白いという嘘を聞いた。

Ah so that is why in the correct sentences suggested do not use "言" as the mothers 'property' as i did with の but instead use it as a verb isnt it? That would make the whole ordeal a lot easier indeed.

So i practically shouldnt think like this, splitting it into two smaller sentences like >>57028321
suggested would be easier (and more natural as a direct consequence)?

I didnt know about this, so atleast i learned something out of my crappy bullshit sentence.
So it is kind of like quoting a previous sentence or refering to a previous happening isnt it? A marker that indicates that the previous sentence is the topic and also quoted or derived from something happening earlier?
Anyways, thank you very much for putting up with my shit. Even if the sentence does not make sense at all, i learned a lot from your suggestions and remarks.

Yes i do this as well, knowing how to construct a sentence on paper is different than thinking one up on the spot. I think that will truly show its advantage in speaking to others.
Although most of the time my vocabulary is not strong enough to do this and i need to look up certain words, or i get stuck on trying to make too big of a sentence. But then again, i have only studying for a month or so now, and have been focussing mainly on learning the kanji and reading.
Anyways, good luck with your English studies! Your English is pretty good already (certainly better than all my Chinese university classmates)!

Not at all. Most, if not almost all international students do not speak dutch.
There is two exceptions, a guy from the US that tried to speak dutch every now and then (quite astounding since they are usually the people least likely to learn an other language) and a guy from ukraine that tried it whilst drunk, lets just say that nobody could really understand what he was saying.
But i am not really surprised at all with dutch grammar being the bitch that it is.
>If not, how do they take a class in your uni?
Almost all courses on my university are in english, including lectures, work lecture support, online workspaces and reading materials.
You could easily come study at my uni and not need to learn a single word dutch. Most public transport has English translation as well so the need to learn it is extremely low. (Although if you go to another country i personally think you should at least make an effort in learning basic conversational dutch like 'good morning', 'nice weather' and 'how are you doing')

Dunno mate, there are a lot of online English teachers from India, Philippines, Eastern Europe, they might have all teaching qualifications and top toefl scores, but when you actually listen to them speak their English is just a bit off, sometimes they use cliché phrases natives don't actually use, or their grammar is too perfect, and their pronunciation is most likely non-native
When you just start learning a language you can't notice these things, but you can get some bad habits
>>57034903
You will be surprised at how Japanese students are bad at English.
Some Japanese uni perform some courses in English, but most courses are taught by Japanese. It's good thing for us because we can learn lots of things in our own language, but I personally think we should be more fluent with speaking English. It was sad when I witnessed a scene that young Japanese person who got confused when he was asked directions by foreign tourist in English. He was supposed to be a student of my uni.
>>57035671
>When you just start learning a language you can't notice these things, but you can get some bad habits
I guess that is true. But all language teachers i have had (French and German) were not born in the countries of which they teach the language. They did however, lived there for quite a while which makes their pronunciation as good as the locals.
But i get your point, there is no way you can check this, especially not when hiring someone from overseas.

I have heard. I reckon Chinese students are comparable and some of them are indeed horrendous in English, even after 2-3 years of being here (which amazes me because i wonder how they survive with neither English nor dutch, and why they chose study overseas in the first place).
There is however one Chinese student that had half a year study delay, so he studied English in that period and he made significant leaps. He is by far the best English speaking Chinese i know now. So i guess most of them dont even try.
>but most courses are taught by Japanese. It's good thing for us because we can learn lots of things in our own language
I think this is part of the problem, because you are not really forced into speaking English because you are still in a 'Japanese environment'. The best way to practice in my opinion would be most of the lesson in English, and then half an hour question time in Japanese to explain concepts and ask difficult questions that you cannot ask/explain in English.
That is from my own experience learning German at school. There was one teacher that did it the 'regular' way out of a textbook and telling us to memorize all the grammar rules, whereas another teacher did it the above mentioned way. My reading and listening comprehension skyrocketed. Although that might be because i am a reading/listening learning type of person and not really a memorizing type.

>The best way to practice in my opinion would be most of the lesson in English
Yeah, the best way to learn English is to immerse myself to English environment.
But I think that performing all classes in English is very difficult for Japanese uni, because most of teachers/professors can't into English in the first place. They are good at their major, but they aren't English teachers.
Hiring foreign teachers/professors looks a good idea, but it's very hard to replace all Japanese teachers/professors with them. They need to be fluent with English and need to have deep knowledge on their major.

Maybe pairing up would be a good idea. Having a guy with a major in English, and a native speaker.
Although obvious disadvantages would be that it is really expensive, and you have a chance of disagreements between teachers during class. (Which could be very good to learn from, or very bad because how can you trust your teachers in English, if they dont even agree with each other)

I completely agree with you on that point. Maybe they have already given up because they think English is a useless skill when ruled by their future Chinese overlords.
From the things i read most students (and the rest of society) also do not really care about end result and only about grades.
For example, you get a test with most intake conversations at a job interview for an engineer to proof that you have learned/know the mathematics, whilst actual application and previous work is not really asked for or even considered irrelevant.
Kind of the opposite way of thinking here, if you have a degree its OK, they dont care about grades at all. Yet it is a giant plus (or even mandatory) if you have previous engineering experience in the real world.
>>57037381
Your idea has pros and cons, but I think it is actually the most based idea ever I heard.
I think our gov should cover the tuition gap that is caused by hiring the native speaker.

Via the other chinese guy, he had pretty good English skills, especially for a chinese guy. And my courses are about engineering (i.e. lots of math, a universal language) and not about stuff you have to write hundreds of pages for in english (luckely).
>Furthermore, how were those international student able to enter your uni?
I have absolutely no clue.
I think generally speaking most students are accepted if they had an equivalant background to the one needed by dutch students, under the assumption that if they miss/lack skills, they will fail anyways.
>>57037719
> For example the Spanish were awesome, the Chinese on the other hand always kept to themselves and never tried to socilalize or even talk to non-chinese people.
I have never had the pleasure of meeting a spanish student, but i have heard the same about them.
Some chinese here do socialize and mix with non-chinese, same with students from india and pakistan really.
The funny thing is the students from china/india socializing are usually willing to work very hard, yet if you have one of them that usually does not socialize in your project group, they try to do the least amount of effort possible.

yeah i certainly recognize this. They seem to try everything by the book and are not very creative in their approach, even though it could save loads of time if they did. I guess that is part of the difference in culture.
>their English is way better than the one the Indians speak
O yes and i recognize this as well.
The worst is if i try to look up any subjects about my course on youtube, the lectures are almost always given by some indian or pakistani guy with a horrible accent and pronunciation. Sitting through those is the worst because you have to concentrate on both trying to understand him, and the things he is trying to explain.
If chinese people speak English, at least they do it fairly decently.

I think there arent that many Japanese students with a reason (or rather, there are a lot of chinese students because of a good reason).
One of the chinese students told me that they have different 'classes' of universities in china. If they dont pass the entrance exam, or dont attain high enough grades to attend an A class university, they will go abroad. Universities abroad are usually considered just as good (if not often better) than A class universities in china, albeit a lot more expensive.
Competition in the Chinese job market is so heavy, that they cannot afford to go to a B class uni because there are too many people trying to get the same job with an A class uni, or a overseas uni degree.
