I'd add a caveat to that. Protestantism is irrelevant just insofar as there is no secular value to it at all.
Catholicism is still relevant insofar as there is enough cultural baggage attached to it for it to provide a meaningful framework of community and tradition for the irreligious as well. I don't believe in God or the afterlife or grace or revelation; but I'm still a Catholic. Protestants cannot do that.
And then, well, Protestantism still has some political sway in the US, so relevant insofar as it does that.

It's not just Catholicism, it's Christianity. Jesus himself did this to a hobo and the pope is obligated to model himself after Jesus.
