Any tips?

>>56883395

we should use thorn and eth, because with th, you never know if it's voiced or unvoiced. I mean, a native anglophone would know automatically, but I've heard many foreigners fuck it up.

Tongue in the back of the throat, Hispanic trill is in the front of the mouth, Germanic and French trill is in the back.
When you prnounce "R" does your tongue go forward or back?
>>56882933
>>56883156
We use that one too depending on where you live.
>>56883430
We did until around the 14th Century. People started to write thorn as Y, hence why you see things like ' Ye olde shoppe'. It was always pronounced the same as 'the'

This is unvoiced.
An easier way to describe it is, unvoiced th like in the word "thought" is like someone with a lisp saying "sought", or just pronouncing an S with a lisp.
Voiced, like in the word "that" would be like "zat" but with a lisp, or, pronouncing "z" with a lisp.

I met a brit who had lived here for 30 years and still spoke with the flat, english r. It sounds a little funny, but not as ridicilous as those few norwegians who can't make a proper r-sound at all. I have no fantastic tips, it's so natural for me I don't think about it at all. I just rest my tongue at the top of my mouth near my front teeth and form a seal so tight air can only just get through. The variation, the rolling, of the sound comes from the tongue being pushed downwars by the air. As you understand, the tip of the tongue has to be quite relaxed for this to work. I don't know if this helps at all, I am sure there is better advice available via google.
>>56883732
Both sound in "ain" and "en" are found in portuguese. The "u" found is found in German and most other germanic languages.
>>56883843
Uvular affricatives are really common, I don't even want to begin listing European languages which use them.
>>56884039

One, two , free
that/this are a slightly different sound, I do those properly, tongue between teeth.
>>56884447
What is there not to get? You probably can't hear the difference in consonant length because it's not a feature of your language, meanwhile people who can't speak English might not be able to hear the difference between sibillants (s, z etch) and dental friatives (th)

>>56884272
The ch in mich is different from that in Sehnsucht.
In mich is the hissy sound (tongue kind of arches so the middle part almost touches the roof of your mouth, then voicelessly breathe out), in Sehnsucht it's the cough-like sound as heard in "ach". It's pretty much a voiceless guttural R.
>>56884573
Yes. Never pronounce the "n" in vowel+n combinations like "en", "on" etc. They are just 1 nasal vowel.
