They do this on purpose because they're evil. They also don't allow people who look too "fit" to join. The whole chain is a scam that takes advantage of the weak-willed and traps them in their unhealthy state for as long as possible. I'm not sure if this whole thread is a joke or not, I'm kinda afraid to do any research to find out.
But one thing about this country is that 98% of all the "biggest chains" of anything (restaurants, stores, whatever...) are fucking terrible.
If you want any kind of quality you go with the small local places. Unless you live in the middle of fucking nowhere, then you have tons of better options.
A lot of people are fucking idiots though, and they flock to the shit they've seen characters in their favorite sitcom or reality show go to.
I joined a local small cheap-as-fuck gym when I was first starting out, and then I quit the second they started to get popular and bought my own equipment to work out at home.
