Also I should add that I'm a student who wants to study abroad; I've visited the country I plan to study in and have been learning the language for about half a year now. My group of friends I hang out with most knows this; they always banter me about wanting to leave the country for some yuropoor shithole or some commie country that isn't America. You're kinda right that America sees The Old World (europe) as backwards in a lot of ways, but they also associate some aspects of European culture with wealthy or prestige (french wine, swiss chocolate, italian clothing or cars, etc). It just depends on the person. Hardly anyone flat out hates Europe though. Most Americans (middle class) would probably admit they'd like to visit Europe once in their life (one of the aforementioned countries)
