It is, I´ll try to explain, you can either aply for "active" service or comunity sevice, in active you go to a base and you serve with an actual batallion of permanent soldiers, they train you like if you are going to be there for ever the only difference is that you do not go to front line combat, in comunity service you go and take part in a lottery, you draw a color ball from a box White and you do service but in your own comunity only saturday morning and it lasts for a year, if you draw black that´s it you have you service done without doing anything. And if you choose to go to a batallion only army and navy take you if you get comunity service you can get an officer from any of the branches.

The Army has this program called MAVNI that grants you expedited citizenship if you have no legal immigrant status in this country, but the only catch is that you either have to speak one of the languages listed or have one of the skills they require, which usually requires a college degree. Spanish is obviously not one of the languages they need, so unless I learn one of them to the point where I understand it like a native speaker, I'm out of luck.

The Mexican military is organized in three tiers
DN1
Heavy combat units. Troops trained to deal with confrontations against other militaries. This includes special forces groups infantry troops with better equipment, armored units, etc
DN2
Internal combat units. Auxiliary combat roles. Military police, light mechanized units, that type of stuff. Mostly for internal security or dealing with combating internal strife or general guard duties.
DN3
Lightly trained units. Basically people who just help out during natural disasters. These guys basically are just trained to help out during floods, storms, and that kind of stuff. They just practice marching and disaster preparedness, maybe shoot a gun once or twice.
Everyone in Mexico is subject to a military lottery system when they turn 18. Depending on your result, you either get have to be in the military or get lucky and aren't required to serve. It's like a draft system. Most people who are picked for military service just go with the DN3 deal, but you can opt into combat roles if you want to.
