That's because our military leadership is not willing to fight. They only fight battles they know they can win.
But in case of emergency we have a mandatory draft for everyone between 17 and 45 so it doesn't matter.
In our former conflicts everyone just got drafted or thrown into jail.

Nah this is skewed as fuck then. Because it would be entirely dependent on your countries international relations, relative security, rivalries, etc. Not just dependent on nationalism and all that stuff.
Eg. Safer countries like Australia and Japan have less reason to go 'fight' a non descript enemy. Whereas someone living in south east Asia, or eastern Europe, would more likely be willing to fight, because they would be thinking about the security of their nation, from say, China or Russia.

Like any conscription, you reach the appropriate age, get drafted from a pool and assigned a place in the military be it airforce, Navy and army. Some specific tasks/roles are volunteers who needs to do a tryout, like SOF and pilots for planes and helicopters.

I know, that's where my family came from. But that was in the first wave around 1890 or something. They were given some farm land to work and that entire family line lived in extreme poverty until my Dad ditched the farm.
