I am obsessed with Greece. I am fascinated by the culture, the language, the history, the people, the list goes on. Unfortunately, as you all probably know, Greece is economically doing poorly right now. My question is mainly directed towards Greeks, but also towards anyone else who is knowledgeable: Is it worth following my dream and moving to Greece, or should I just give up because it will be a struggle to find a job? Secondly, how do Greeks feel about Americans? Would it be difficult to make friends? Thank you for reading my post.

Unless you have a STEM degree you don't have a chance of getting a good job. And even then it's a gamble right now.
>>
>>56706332
If you really want to do it, find out what good paying jobs are available. If the answer is none, then you shouldn't try to force it to happen
>>
>>56706391
Without a STEM degree would I be able to get an okay job that would be enough to live with? Also, do you think Greece will be doing better economically within the next decade, or do you think it is just going to keep going downhill?
>>
>>56706473
Sorry, I meant to say "available IN YOUR FIELD".

It's not worth career switching just to maybe make it happen.
>>
>>56706491
My wife is American. She hates Greece. She thinks that modern Greek culture is very different from American culture. It's gonna be something you're not used to.
>>
>>56706570
If you don't mind my asking, what about Greece does she dislike? I do not know much first-hand about modern Greek culture, but from all of the differences I have seen between American culture, Greece seems great.

Well, half of her hair is blue and she gets stared at a lot. Tbh if you're a normal looking dude you'll be fine. Also forget about smoking weed and staying in-doors as it is in the US. If you want to have fun you have to go outside.

So we told Kostas to marry an American woman and he did it, the absolute madman!

How does it feel like to get cucked 24/7?
>>
>>56706672
I do not smoke weed, and I enjoy being outside. I think based on my appearance, I could probably pass as a local (until they hear my accent of course). Also, I know this is going to vary for everyone, but do you think in general a Greek woman would marry an American man?
>>
>>56706710
It's dyed man.
>>
>>56706762
No shit it's dyed, why would you marry someone with florescent hair?
>>
>>56706664
It sounds insane, I know. I admit that my view of Greece is also partly romanticised, but I see no major reason not to move to Greece if I can secure a job that would allow me to live somewhat comfortably.
>>
>>56706805
Forget about getting a job. The average Greek adult still lives with their family even when they're married. Guess the reason.
>>
>>56706774
It doesn't look bad. You're probably imagining some kind of SG slut. Chill we're young.
>>
>>56706805
unless it's summer, there's a 1/4 chance you won't find a job.
I imagine not speaking the language will only make it harder
>>
>>56706882
I am already studying the language, and I would not move until I am at a conversational level. Do you think in general Greeks would be friendly towards an American?
>>
>>56706924
yes ofc
>>
>>56706924
Yeah. There will be banter but if you're cool everyone's cool.
>>

Thank you for all of the information.
>>
No offense, OP, but for some reason I can't believe you're really being serious. Perhaps wait a good 10 years (or even for retirement, Southern Europe and Cyprus are decent places to spend those years).

As for cultural differences, if you're young, they won't seem that big in your peer group.

>>56706828

To be fair, the change doesn't seem to be that pronounced compared to other EU countries:

>>
>>56707145
I am serious. Assuming I am able to find a job, is there really any reason why moving to Greece is a bad idea?
>>

Do you like the summer lifestyle? Swimming and late night bars/clubs? If yes you'll be just fine.

>>
>>56707222
Assuming find a *well-paying* job and so have no problem with bills, food, rent, enough leftover money for entertainment and some luxuries. I'll try to think of some reasons...

1) Crazy bureaucracy for anything you wish to do. Especially with the falling standards of our health system, good luck with that.
2) The USA isn't exactly Germany but Greece is much less efficient in every single area.
3) The women on average aren't into casual sex as much as women in the USA, if that matters to you. They have slightly more traditional ideas about dating, marriage etc. but this is changing.
4) You seem to have a romanticized idea of it. Not a single country in the world can live up to those standards, not even any Scandinavian one, let alone Greece. It depends if you're ok with disappointment.
5) We're on average a less tolerant society than the USA in some aspects. This isn't too much the case among younger people but there probably still exists a difference.

I'm sure I can think of more.
>>
>>56706332
Making friends wouldn't be difficult, Greeks are probably one of the friendliest people to strangers. But finding a well paying job is going to be a real challenge if you aren't well educated and/or don't speak Greek (it's hard as it is for those that do).

>>56707394
Thank you for listing those. Most of those things do not affect me specifically, aside from bureaucracy. Do you personally think that Greece is going to start recovering within a decade or so? I feel like a lot of people on this post are assuming that Greece is always going to be like it is right now.
>>
>>56707565
It will probably get better at some point, but I don't see a lot changing in the next 10-15 years. Too many old people with a completely different mindset are dragging us down.
>>
>>56707565

I don't know. I did say wait 10 years for that very reason (even the most *optimistic* estimates I've seen don't put some sort of "recovery" before 2019-2020). Blame us and the incompetent people we keep producing and voting in, I guess.
>>
>>56707406
Is it difficult to find jobs in Academia, such as working at a university?
>>
Anyway, just to give you a picture of post-Junta Greece, imagine a Sanders government ruling a country not of very competent people like white Americans are, on average, but rather of averagely competent ones and you have Greece during most of the post-Junta years.

Yeah, I'm not doubting we'd be doing better in the long run with ND. That's what has been clearly shown now. The Greek left keeps failing and basically forcing us leftists to vote for center-right parties.
>>
>>56707879
Thanks. As someone who is appalled by the degeneracy and lack of virtuous people in the United States, do you think I would find Greeks to be more agreeable?
>>
>>56708082
What a loaded question.
>>
>>56708134
And disingenuous
>>
>>56708082
Depends on what you mean by "degenerate".

Do you consider increasing acceptance of LGBT rights to be "degenerate"? Then no.

Do you think casual sex and high partner counts to be "degenerate"? Then yes, we aren't at US levels yet.

As for "virtuousness"...is a Greek woman or man less likely to cheat on their partner than an American one? Yes. Are they more likely to give in to political and financial corruption? Yes, too.

And so on it goes.
>>
>>56708082
Go to Thessaloniki and be American around them.
>>
>>56708134
>>56708158
Yeah, that was a poorly worded question. My apologies.
>>
Visit every summer to practice speaking the language if you're so inclined, but don't actually stay here. It's not worth it. Unless you were born into it, there's very little merit in studying Greek seriously while young I think. I'm not sure I even know any adult learners that made any actual leeway into the language in their first decade. I knew an old foreign housewife that lived in Greece since before I was born, she had half-Greek children older than me, and her Greek was still very poor. That's probably a bit of an outlier, but you get the idea. I'm working on breaking through a semi-insurmountable language barrier myself, but at least there's the promise of actual moolah at some point.
>>
>>56708177
All right. Sorry, I see that my question was very ambiguous. What I meant was that in general, Americans (here at least) are immensely dishonest and materialistic. Focusing on those two particular adjectives, do you think Greece is more virtuous?
>>
>>56706332
I'm first generation greek american so I've gone to greece practically every summer and lived there for 3 years. I've enjoyed myself immensely the thing is that I am Greek so for me it's like a second home. For you it won't be the same. You aren't part of the culture so you'll have to slowly and painfully attempt to mix your way in and the two are just so distinctive that you're going to have a bad time
>>
>>56708269
You'll find a very insular culture. which is beautiful. something we've lost.
>>
>>56708269
No, we're immensely dishonest and materialistic too.

Is there a single (general, not self-selected like monks, hippies and whatnot) population in the world that's not particularly materialistic in the present day, anyway?
>>
>>56708284
I am glad I encountered someone like you, you are the perfect person to compare these two countries. Could you please explain what makes Greece distinctive? What would I struggle to adjust with as an American? Many thanks.
>>
>>56708324
pasok?
>>
>>56708308
Honestly, I wouldn't say that's generally true anymore, in the under-30 age group, which I imagine is the Americanon's peer group.

It isn't like he's going to be living in some random village and even those are unfortunately being abandoned and decaying...
>>
>>56707927
actually the junta was very corrupt and largely put the gravestone on the miracle years of economic growth that preceded it (since the 50s, and only for the upper middle class).
this meme that the junta helped the economy needs to be put to rest.

Greece has such a laid back lifestyle, it seems to be one of the best countries to go to where the people love life. They don't try to survive they try to live. Unlike America. Now it has all the seasons, getting very cold and very hot so you might not enjoy that but I do. As an American you might not be able to deal with nothing being open on certain days and having smaller hours. The food is very tasty yet it isn't as diverse, in america you can go out and try any type of food, not so in greece. You just have greek food and very rarely other cultures.not much in the way of junk food and you will miss American burgers and fast food. As an American from a big city any city in greece will seem very small yet packed with culture. You would be used to diversity in American but in greece it's all greek looking people unless you are in the big cities but still not as much as America. First what city and state are you from?

frankly, greece is just a very long social experiment conducted by the austrians to see if they inject enough memes into a countries education system they would be able to make the local population believe that they are hellenic. you can check the history of this going way back to early 1800s if you don't believe me, the practical joke was started by an austrian prince who was a hellenaboo

so far it has been an unprecedented success, we will say what the future brings though

Well I'm from LA so greece is like going to the village. Honestly I think the hardest part would be finding a job and learning the language. Also not as many amenities as the states. I would recommend going to greece for a summer and trying it out. There arent a lot cons besides it being a culture that isnt your native one and might seem alien. It's pretty easy to acclimate to life there but that's from a person who has gone back and forth often. Like this summer I'm going for 6 months.

Re stay in greece, you'll miss being able to go anywhere with your feet or the metro. The food is amazing in America except no souvlaki that compares. you will gain 10 kilos, my cousin got so damn fat when he came to live with us. Although your accent will get all the ladies here. My cousin was supposed to stay for 3 years and finish highschool and he stayed for 1.5 before he wanted to go back. Also you can't drink unless youre 21 so for my 16 year old cousin it sucked. Try it Come for a summer and see.

You should consider moving to a non-first world country if you want to distance yourself from the ethically corrupt capitalist morals. If you insist though, a nice option would be life in a small city / village. Some places are really laid back and super-comfy, BUT finding a job there is so difficult. Your best bet would be to become self-employed
