The Canadian accent in the city is one of the blandest accents I've ever heard. The Canadian accent in the more rural parts makes people sound uneducated and at least mildly retarded (and this is saying something given my accent is roundly mocked back home).
In all, I don't think there's a single thing about Canada by which I've been impressed.

On people being petty - I think people are quite insecure. Shaming seems to be rooted in our culture for whatever reason. There are some genuine worldly people as you said and the open mindedness seems to peak in rural British Columbia. Rural Saskatchewaners are the archetypal Canadians in my pov. Bigger cities are more multicultural and Americanized, so even though that's where our population lies, it can hardly be measured as Canadian.
