This sounds even more wasteful. If we need slaveforce we should make things that last as long as possible, but without more intelligence or desires than absolutely necessary. Anything more and it would be just cruel. If we weed intelligent learning robots, they too should last as long as possible so that teaching them does not go to the waste.

If we can solve the hard problem of consciousness and then prove that the AIs we build have qualia, I would advocate letting the human species go extinct in favour of the new lifeform, which would be far better suited to space colonisation than us.
