Portuguese and Spanish are similar enough to understand each others as far as I know?

not in a perfect way but you can sort of understand a brazilian if they speak slowly and maybe it works the same way for them

im not even portuguese and by learning portuguese i also can read in spanish (with occasional help of a dictionary). i have trouble understanding spoken spanish though.

PT and ES are loosely mutually understandable; if both speakers are patient, speak slowly and they NEED to understand each other, they will do it.
What >>56697415 said is true, though; PT has a somewhat more complex sound system and uses contrasts ES doesn't. So ES speakers end missing pairs as Z vs. S, Ó (as in Gott) vs. Ô (as in Sohn), CHI vs. TI ("tschi") in stuff in PT and the whole thing ends sounding like Spanish beaten until pureed.

I only know the Spanish I learned in high school and my one encounter with a Brazilian woman at an antique shop I was able to understand everything she said in Portuguese. She couldn't understand anything I said even though I spoke in incredibly simple sentences and with a decent Mexican accent.
The intelligibility was not mutual. I feel that Spanish speakers (even at lower levels) have an easier time understanding Portuguese than the other way around. I'm sure there are plenty of Youtube videos about mutual intelligibility.

It's actually the opposite, studies show that without training, portuguese speakers can understand more of spanish than spanish speakers can understand portuguese.
But the languages are similar enough that with little training a conversation can already occur.

I can understand 95% of written Portuguese and like 80% of spoken if the one speaking is from the South but when I traveled to the North it was like trying to talk to aliens

Southern Brazil has some influence of Spanish and Italian, like the way we pronounce the "R" and the "S", so it's natural that it's easier for you

The difference between Portuguese and Spanish is like the difference between Ukrainian and Russian.
Beside English, I speak Spanish, and Russian. I can somewhat understand Ukrainian, and Portuguese.
