This is untrue. A middle name can be a useful unique identifier if you have a very common name.
In my part of America, my (also white) name is the functional equivalent of "John Smith". There are dozens of people in the area with the exact same name, and probably hundreds more with the same name where the words are spelled cosmetically different. To avoid confusion, a middle name is useful in these contexts. I'm not aware of any other person on the planet earth who shares my same first, middle and last name, though they have decent odds to exist. Or if they do, they don't seem to live around here.
For the record, I like having a common name, for the same reason I like 4chan. It makes me tricky to search, and anonymizes me not totally (middle names, IP addresses), but enough.

Isn't that like very common in southamerica? Virtually everyone I know has 2 surnames, the first one from the father and the second one from the mother.
In Finland there is no "middle" name. But you may have more than 1 first names (3 max), usually the extra names are considered middle names thought, but legally you can call yourself (or sign as any) of your names and it is legit.
