You realize that the USSR still required equipment from the US, right? Also, consider that the USSR really only fought a Land-Air war and didn't build nearly as many ships as the US. The US also built 3x as many aircraft as the USSR. The USSRs industrial capability wasn't that great compared to the US. Comparing GDPs also brings up that in 1939 the GDP of the US was 800 Billion and the USSR's GDP was 359 Billion. By 1945 the US's GDP was 1400 and the USSR's was 343 Billion.

Depends on the location and the time. Later years were calm and had their number of pros. Lenin and Stalin years were mostly pure hell for everyone except backwater villages that weren't busted by reds, greens or blacks.
