It worked perfectly fine for more than one and a half thousand years. It isn't like people have no idea of what they were saying, every Catholic could say that Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, etc. in Latin, plus it introduced some Latin into the lives of ordinary people who otherwise would not have heard any.
Before the 1960s you could go anywhere in the world and mass would be the same. Today masses in Latin are uncommon, if I go to a mass in another country I will not know the responses or anything. It's just a break with tradition that was completely unnecessary.

This is the Croatian Catholic Church in western Melbourne.
All mass is held in the Croatian language, and our priests don't actually belong to the Australian branch of the Catholic Church, rather, they take orders from Croatia.
About the Church, it was mostly funded over a long time by the Croatian community here. However, we didn't get much say over the design. It was built around 2000, and I've always thought it was ugly. The designers tried to go with a "modern" design. Nearly everyone in the community agrees that it should've been built in a more classical way. However, the priest was in contact with the designers for the most part, not the community.
