ITT: forgotten words from your language/country

I'll start: colorado was commonly used instead of rojo (red)
>>
G'day

It only exists in backwards rural places
>>
the use of æ to ae
>>
Defenestrar - to throw something/one through the window
Olvidar - to forget. Replaced by esquecer.
Alhures - in another place.
>>
ochi
>eyes (glaza)

>hand (ladon')

>dick
>>
>>56604608
Definitely forgotten, because I've never heard any of these words.
>>

How are we supposed to post forgotten words, if everybody had already forgotten about them?

What kind of sorcery is this?
>>
>>56604806
I still hear a certain professor using "alhures". He's considered pedantic even by his ex-wife.

>>56604822
Kinda... which words were preserved or kicked out of the languages was pretty much random.
>>
>>56604608
>Defenestrar
thats essentially the same thing as we have in english, defenestrate
>>
>>56604608
>alhures
algures?
>>
>>56604608
>>56604806
While "alhures" is uncommon, especially in Brazil, "algures" survives and is in regular use in Portugal. There's also the opposite, "nenhures".
>>
>>56605183
yup, can confirm
>>
>>56605166
What >>56605183 said. "Alhures" is almost certainly an archaism, unlike "algures".
>>
>>56605294
you guys use "algures" or has it also been forgotten?
>>
>>56605370
It's quite rare, I remember only seeing the written word, never listening to. People simply use "noutro lugar", "num lugar" or similar.
>>
>>56605463
interesting, thanks
>>
>>56605548
>>56605463
how often are there differences in vocab between pt and pt-br? im curious cause muh heritage is portuguese and when i heard brazilian accent for the first time i was quite confused that it was so different.
>>
>>56605597
well we use different expressions from each other, but with the same exact meanings (that it to say, it's not like the portuguese or the brazilians use words for things with no correspondence with each other).
mostly it comes down to the way words are spoken. portuguese tend to close their vowels, and every "s" at the end of a word sounds like a "j". by contrast, brazilians read every single "s" as an "s" sound, but they also open up their vowels a lot and also tend not to read the tongue "r" sound and instead use something like a "hh" sound (a strong "h"). they also tend to add a "shee" or "jee" sound whenever a word has a "t" or a "d". for instance the word
>distinguir
portuguese for "to distinguish". brazilians will read "distshinguihh", but portuguese will read "dijtinguir"

>Änglamakerska
A woman who took care of unwanted children and let them die

>tfw this was apparently commonly used back kn the day

Why should you need a word for that? It was something common?
>>
>>56606022
savages with a savage language the lot of you
>>
>>56604203
Actually we used colorado a lot during the Franco years because red was associated with commies. Old people still do.

>>56604203
>Canadian Patriotism
English (Canadian) phrase, used to describe feeling proud to be Canadian. Nowadays "种族主义" is used instead.

This word exists in German, too. We (used to) call these women "Engelmacherinnen", angel makers.
>>
>>56604203
Puerto Ricans still use colorado interchangeably with pelirrojo.

>anicroche
The best definition I can find is when /pol/ finds something fishy yet vague and blames the jews. Basically something gone wrong.

>menterie
I've been it's not used in France anymore, it means "lie," they use mensonge instead.

>boucane
Also not used in France anymore, means smoke.

And in Spanish the common word for forest "bosque" is the old word in French : bosquet.
>>
>Jauto (tasteless)

Replaced by 'Insípido'.

> Desnortado (disorientated)

Replaced by 'Desorientado'.

>Picaro / Picardía (audacious)

Replaced by 'Atrevido'.

PS: idk why, but now it's a meme.
>>
Related to bush?
>>
>>56610736
Pícario and picardía are still somewhat used, though.
>>
>>56610771

In the life outside internet, nobody uses it. At least in my country.

It was a word used many years ago, like 'guapo' (manly), 'bizarro' (heroic), colorado, etc, etc..
>>
>>56610824
Guapo is still used up here, though it means handsome.

No clue about bizarro, though.
>>
>>56610837

Yeah, 'Bizarro' actualy in spanish means heroic, if you google it in RAE still has it's meaning.

We still have a military march wich says:

"Aquí está la bandera que un día
en la batalla tremoló triunfal
y, llena de orgullo y bizarría,
a San Lorenzo se dirigió inmortal."

Kek

--

And guapo in our country means manly, ej: ¿Te haces el guapo? Hacemos un mano a mano acá no más'.
>>
prevaricate - to lie
>>
>>56604284
I still say it and I live in the city

Up here guapo is used by mid-aged women to describe guys like Channing Tatum and Henry Cavill, kek.

>>56604203
You used to refer to a group of people. Now we say y'all and yins etc. And for the 2nd person singular we had thou and thee.
>>
>>56607560
I'm pretty sure women used to give their babies to nannies but these nannies would get so many that they would let some die so all of them wouldn't grow up fucked up
>>
>>56604612
We actually use all these words.

>>
yon and yonder

As in:
here, there, yonder
this, that, yon

Where 'yon' is like a step in distance away from 'that', and 'yonder' is a step in distance away from 'there'. They weren't replaced with any other words, but the concept is still expressed in phrases like 'way over there' (which would be 'over yonder').

...Actually I have family in rural Alabama that still uses yonder (said like 'yunder'), which is the only reason I know about this.
>>
A lot and i mean a lot of dialectal sayings and words.
If we are talking about normal italian:
Tristo is a word i really like, it mean both evil or unfortunate.
And for many words there's almost always a cooler sounding word not used anymore, quite a shame. I really need to read the whole Divine Comedy one day, lots of interesting words not used anymore.
>>
>>56604203
Ereyesterday (the day before yesterday)
Overmorrow (the day after tomorrow)

Americans no longer use the word "fortnight" (two weeks) and consider it archaic, but it's common in the UK.

I see it in use every day, weird.
>>
Codesto

It's used only in Tuscany as of now
Questo is used to talk about something close to himself, the person who is speaking (similiar to This)
Quello is used to talk about something far from both the speaker and the listener (That)

Codesto is used to talk about something close to the listener but far from the person speaking.

Questo, Quello, Codesto.
In latin they are
Hic, ille, iste.

It is an outdated concept of guarding the areas of your country that connect you with adjacent countries so that only people / things you want to get into your country can get in.
>>

Isn't that just like border control or customs or something?
