The thing is, the French Resistance only began in June 1941, when Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union and the Molotov-Ribbentropp pact was broken. Previously, they did nothing.
So it's not like they "didn't want to live under a totalitarian dictatorship". Vichy France wasn't totalitarian, but the model that they wanted to install in France, the Soviet model, was.
Look, I'm not being "edgy" here, I'm not defending Nazi Germany, their actions in the Eastern Front were barbarous and cruel. But Vichy France wasn't Nazi, just like Fascist Italy or Francoist Spain. All these regimes were just mild, national conservative authoritarian dictatorships, they were not totalitarian, and in countries like France and Italy, more people were killed by the victorious communist guerrilla in postwar purges than by the "fascist" governments they were fighting against.
