The centrifuge forces are strong in this one.
Basically comunautarism based on language made the Flemish and Waloons derive further from each other as time pass by to the point where it's basically two different countries jammed into a single border.
Populist parties in Vlaanderen used some resentment from.the time when the south was the economic driver of the country with coal and steel about some imaginary offense to the Flemish speaking minority back then.
Because both communities basically live in parallel political and administrative universes they were free to roam while the south, diving into economical.difficulties went for socialists clientelists.
They should secede at.once and leave Bruxelles as European.territory like the Vatican or something, but Flemish want the economic benefits of the French speaking capital in their territory.

French was the sole official language, the governement did everything trying to Frenchify the Flemish, and partly succeded.

barely 60 years ago we actually had to have mass scale protests and even riots just to get educated in our own language
there were even terrorists attacks as a result of it (a memorable one where francophone terrorists blew up a WW1 monument dedicated to peace just because the flemish rallied around it)

I mean, we all know most large western European cities are heading that way sooner or later, but Brussels seems to have jumped the gun in that regard
is there some historical/colonial aspect like with France/Britain? the only Belgian colony I know of is the Congo, but I'm pretty sure they're black and christian (or practice local traditional religions)
