It's not about being world power actually. We had industry, good economy, great social benefits. We had free housing, free medicine, free education, very cheap food and clothes. USSR was a first world country if talking about life standards, it's HDR was #20 in 1989, in a year USSR was decaying under Gorbachev rule. We had no unemployment. Economy was getting better generally. In Russia the main problem was political instability - the amount of political murders was ridiculous. It didn't help that the Russian Empire was fairly lenient with them as well, rather than just executing them people like Lenin were either exiled or sent to labour camps for a few years.
Part of the reason Germany was so nervous prior to WW1 was that they predicted that, thanks to French investment in infrastructure, by the late 1910s they would no longer be able to win a war. Russia's army was the largest in Europe, and the only reason that Germany didn't get completely BTFO on the Eastern Front was because of superior German infrastructure when it came to transporting troops and supplies.

Stalin was violent and a very harsh ruler but he actually created most of our modern industry, defeated nazis etc. He is a controversial person, made many good and bad things.
