In Italian it's [parmi'dʒa:no] but Americans pronounce it more like [pɒrməsæn]
I've also heard [pɒrmiʒʌn]

We learned all our Italian from Sicilian immigrants

Parmejaan
Moozadel
Gabagool
>>
>>56536164
>J
>fonema italiano
Che cazzo ho appena letto? In Inglese la lettera J produce sempre il suono /dʒ/
>>
>>56536341
>Moozadel
>Gabagool
Wait what are these 2
>>
>>56536341
>implying there's capicola in Sicily

I'm not even Italian and I knew this, jesus christ
>>
>>56536341
Isn't gabagool just a meme word like babadaboopi
>>
>>56536380
"J" is typically voiced in english
as in "John" instead of "Jean"
This doesn't always hold true because of loanwords, of course.

in the sense that they say parmesan with the s that sounds like the french j (je suis) instead of saying a normal s?

If I ever hear these words pronounced IRL, I think I'd die. You just can't butcher a language that much, it's inhumane.
>>
>>56534090
this in englisho

>>56534993
this in the Italiano

WTF I hate the US now
>>
>>56536441
It makes perfect sense though, in most southern dialects voiced and voiceless plosive are allophones, and o in standard italian is often interchanged with u in southern dialects.

So from [kapicola] we have [gabagul]

I'm guessing the consonant at the end is due to vowel elision in English.
>>
>>56534763
If the common Italian pronounciation is actually Florentine and other regions had their own historic dialects and presentations, do people say Parmesan as people in Parma said it before unification? Or is it like southern Italian foods are more accurately said by idiot Italian Americans than the old country terronis do now?

Plosives and labials*, my bad
>>
>>56536641
Yes, but it's much more likely that those words were changed by Neapolitans. Try to pronounce them, they sound much more like Neapolitan than Sicilian.

Also Americans, when you say French words, you don't sound more authentic or cultured when you do an exaggerated -ay at the end.
>ballay, buffay, gourmay, poulay, filay

Just finish at the "e" sound, there's no room for the y.
>>
>>56537610
That's just the phonetic range we use, it has nothing to do with trying to be cultured
