What old great empires do you miss?
I think Austria is the one I miss the most. Used to be the biggest player on the block, especially in the middle of Europe, and is now overshadowed by Italy and Germany, which it used to control.

Austrian Empire was not like the German Empire at all. It helps to think of it as the Habsburg Empire rather than the "Austrian" Empire, because Austria didn't exist as a nation until after WW1.
The Habsburg Empire was a multi-ethnic multi-national empire united ONLY by loyalty to the Emperor. There was no ordnung, it was very messy indeed.
The idea of "Austria" made sense only as Imperial idea, today's nation-state of Austria is in many ways an artificial country that shouldn't exist. Its very existence is a punishment for starting WW1 and that punishment will continue for as long as Austria exists.

Yeah, so have many other German-speaking duchies. But there was no Austrian NATION and that is my point. The idea of Austria as a STATE meant more than the old duchy, it referred to the Imperial state of Austria as the personal possessions of the Habsburg monarchy. The people under the Emperor were all Austrians.
It's quite alien to how we think about the state today, but I like that model. I'm not sure that splitting everything into nation-states is a good idea.
