Reykjavík is not the reason to come to Iceland
you take a day or two, max three while you're here but you visit Iceland for the natural sights generally
I'd recommend the glacier Snæfellsjökull, the southern tip of Vatnajökulsþjóðgarður and Skaftafell

and if you want to venture that far lake Mývatn in the North is a must see

in uni it just depends on the profs

and if you study Icelandic literature the sagas will play a large role

like, really ? I get it there are a lot more francophones than icelandicophones but still
I mean if you're doing research in this specific field you have to know icelandic at some point isn't this contributing to less people speaking icelandic and overall icelandic being a less popular language ?

>>
>>56515480
yeah, he's autistic
like my caretaker pretends not to be but he learned chinese just to fuck chinese prostitutes
>>
>>56515545
not really when spoken
if you speak very slowly and clearly maybe a little bit but nothing like Portuguese-Spanish or Dutch-German
in writing they're mostly mutually intelligible although there are plenty of strange words and expressions on both sides
reportedly Icelanders have an easier time reading Faroese than the other way around
they're artificially similar in writing though because the Faroese didn't preserve their written language unlike Icelanders and then in the late 19th century they created it by essentially localizing Icelandic with the intent of respecting etymologies
which is why 'ð' in Faroese has no fixed sound and why the written language generally doesn't map as well to the spoken language as most European languages (better than the clusterfuck that is English though)
>>
>>56515595
kek that's dedication
one of the best reasons I've ever heard for learning a language though aside from living where it's spoken
>>

capitalarea.png
2 MB, 993x782
>>56515950
I live a 40 minutes walk from central Reykjavík
Kópavogur is Reykjavík though
the city is divided into 6 municipalities for historical reasons, Reykjavík, Kópavogur, Hafnafjörður, Garðabær, Seltjarnarnes and Mosfellsbær all form "the Capital area" which is by all sane definitions a single city see >>56512695

but people where? here or in the Faroes?
people here are annoyingly progressive like in Sweden, more so in the capital area but also with a healthy dose of arrogance and patriotism, especially not in the city
the Faroese are more conservative, more religious
>>
>>56516150
i was referring to iceland. sucks that iceland went progressive, i've noticed that nordic countries seem to succumb to it the most. i wonder if theres a reason for that?

i kinda have a fetish for the idea of rural icelandic fishing towns, with cozy little shops where everyone knows each other. it would probably get boring after awhile but the thought is nice

is it true that reykjavík has a "polish ghetto"?

husavik.jpg
860 KB, 1000x667
>>56516261
there's definitely a reason for it but I'm not sure what it is
probably the cosmopolitan feeling of being able to speak more than one language and being internet addicts

if there's a reported Polish ghetto it's greatly exaggerated
it's definitely referring to a neighborhood in eastern Reykjavík called Breiðholt where a lot of immigrants, Poles, Lithuanians and Thais live but there are also a lot of lower class Icelanders there
there aren't as many Poles here as there used to be and they aren't as violent either, the crime rate in Breiðholt has been going down and the property prices up for the last few years

and yea those fishing villages are very comfy but I can't imagine living there for more than a while
there's a reason why the population of countryside has been going down while the population of Iceland is going up
