They were ok before white people. Now they drink, commit suicide, and accept hand outs because their culture couldn't evolve at a natural rate and was instead forced. They're also faced with identity issues.

I lived near a reservation growing up. I knew a kid who lived by himself from like 8 years old on, a kid who'd went to rehab for heroin multiple times before he was 18, a kid whose mom abused him so badly his mind was damaged on top of his epilepsy, a kid who killed himself in middle school. Like half the native kids graduate, the other half drop out or go to alternative school. Then the cycle of abuse and drugs repeats, ad infinitum. The tribal leaders don't do anything to alleviate it either.
They fuck up their own lives, but at least they don't fuck up others. It's pretty depressing because they can physically see their people going extinct.
They sound incredible and wise in the textbooks. They look sad and disillusioned in their lawless communities IRL. Many of them have a genetic trait that prevents them from properly digesting alcohol because they did not have it for generations past. Alcoholism is a big blight for injuns. Seeing them drink listerine is a common sight.

There's something fishy going on. I'll probably be hated to death for this post but here it goes:
The only actual crushes I've ever had was on native looking guys, I've got this since I was a fucking child, but I'm a faggot from another country so my chance of finding one "for me" is basically zero.
I'm even doing some plans to move to flagstaff but the general chances for everything to go right are so small I have trouble having any hope.
Generally speaking their culture and mythos sound very interesting, but their current state is very sad to look at. I wish I could actually do something for them, but I know the only path to their survival would also require them to sacrifice a lot of what makes their culture unique.
That being said I got pretty sad when I looked how the catholic religion affected their religion. The whole modern peyote thing comes of as a desperate attempt to keep something alive.
Victimization may also end up being a problem for them, since it makes everyone affected by it weaker.
Still you don't hear national movements to help them, maybe so many go to the escapism route because they feel no one cares about them, and that's something I can relate to.
