Well you recall incorrectly. The ASEAN nations built up and militarized their tiny islands/reefs in the past.

Also, China legally owns the Paracel islands. That means the Northern Spratly's are actually within China's EEZ.

Still, the Chinese are pretty much in the wrong here using common sense. It's stupid of them. But so are many of the ASEAN nations. That's what needs to be pointed out. Also, Taiwan claims the exact same areas as China.
