Without exaggeration, I had a couple of europeans ask me what I thought about him when I was in europe over this past summer.
One person even replied with "Oh, the state where Michael Moore is from" when I told them I'm from Michigan.

Personally I'm fond of Louisiana because A) it's a very pretty state IMO, and B) it has a very unique culture and feel, and the best cuisine. Cajun food a best.
Out of Georgia and Alabama, I'd say Georgia's definitely better by far.

Smokey Mountains, Memphis (stay in Memphis don't go wandering off into the nignog suburbs), Chatanooga, and Nashville are all great places to visit.
The Smokies are so damn beautiful in a foggy morning.
Kentucky is great to visit its woods during the beginning of autumn just to see those colorful strokes of paint across the canopies.

The closest thing I could compare alligator to would be a sort of cross between chicken and fish, both in terms of taste and texture. If you ever come back, you should try some alligator boudin.
