aw shit I was just around that area

Why the fuck was Austria-Hungary ever a thing?
It was the most stupidest shit and I will never understand why they would make such an incredibly retarded asshole of a decision.

It is also the most desolate place on earth. Just imagine the foreground and perfectly flat for 500 square miles. Ive heard the native americans avoided the area because it was cursed, but I can never find a source.

Americans think that public transit = deadly authoritarian socialism.

>>56376999
The Habsburg Empire pre-dated nationalism by centuries, but the actual compromise that turned it into "Austria-Hungary" was a relatively late effort to keep it afloat towards the end of its lifespan.

Because we all use planes. We have more airports than any other country. Planes are much more efficient than trains. Plus, this is a really big country.
>>
>>56376864

Several reasons. Firstly, passenger rail infrastructure in the United States isn't as well-developed as in Europe, India, or other countries in which traveling by train is considered a standard mode of transportation. Secondly, given that we live in a large and relatively affluent country, most of us have cars for driving short distances and would prefer to take a plane rather than an overnight train for anything longer.

I do wish we had better options when it comes to commuting or transiting by rail. However, the current fares for traveling by Amtrak are so expensive that a person may as well book with Spirit or another budget airline. I live in Michigan and the only relatively cheap route from my city is to Chicago; if I want to travel farther, say to Champaign, I'd save money and time by driving.

Traveled from Orlando to Miami with Amtrak, it was an interesting experience. The conductor had some finnish heritage and she was nice to us. It was slow as fuck and the cars were outdated as well. But compared to Greyhound it was a delightful experience.

Greyhound is transportation for adventurous students and niggers.

Nigga I'd rather pay $50 for greyhound than $300 for a plane ticket

Maybe i'm just poor or masochist.

Are we talking passenger trains or freight trains?

Do you ever wonder why those dragon dildo crates you order can get from Los Angeles to your home in the East coast so frequently and on time?

Spoiler, it's not airplanes.
>>
Why would we need to? If it's too far to drive then fly.
>>
>>56376864
Because Amtrak is a government-funded company with no reason to give a fuck about efficiency or performance. Don't listen to this asshat >>56377263

Why don't you use that rail network for passenger transport, though?
>>
>>56380046

Not that guy, but one of the problems Amtrak has on a lot of routes is that it doesn't own the tracks - meaning that they have to give right of way to privately own freight trains. Those rails were constructed for the transportation of freight rather than people, and that's what they're primarily used for.

Because we have a bunch of highways and interstate road systems i guess idk lmao
>>
>>56380046
Some are but car ownership is so high that its only effective for mid to large cities. Also endless bureaucracy means bringing back passenger rail service takes decades
>>
>>56380095
We have a similar problem in Canada. The rail system is owned by businesses, private citizens, and foreign investors, or otherwise is handled strangely because the rails pass through lands with weird old treaties or around some old coot's four hundred acres of weeds (and by gum he won't let no dirty rail cars pass through, ya hear). This has made public rail transport incredibly difficult to accomplish. It is, and has always been, the ideal solution. It's way, way cheaper to do rail than plane transport. It's also nicer too (dining cars, onboard entertainment doesn't have to be "shitty in-flight movie, etc). There's a reason the Orient Express makes us think of monumental history. And it's frustrating that what prevents it from happening again is bureaucratic gridlock and market roadblocks.

>The solution is for the state to nationalize all rails, and then rent its use back to companies that want it, instead of this insane patchwork system of letting the zillions of rail companies, private citizens, and foreign investors own a nightmare quilt of rail systems all across the country.
>But you can't suggest this because MUH FREEDUMS, MUH GOMMUNISM, even though it would make business easier for everyone, travel cheaper for everyone, and saw highway traffic down.
