African-American is a perfectly fitting term, I'm not sure what our problem is with it. It just differentiates between Americans of different ancestry like Irish Americans and Scottish Americans etc. who all proudly share that information and bond over it.

No, it's not. White skin wouldn't have evolved from dark skin if it was an evolutionary disadvantage. Light skin exists because a) the diet of early farmers didn't provide all the nutrients needed to produce dark skin and b) less UV light further from the equator means we needed less melanin so it was a waste to produce it anyways. It's more efficient in far north/south regions to have lighter skin, while darker skin is more adapted to equatorial areas.
