Well, Russian and American societies have operated for most of their respective histories on widely different principles. Russia has had centuries to intrinsically carve the Russian character through struggles. Despite all the turmoil, many Russians have somewhat of a clear image of what kind of society they want, and a strong leadership at its helm to preserve this structure. American society has no clear image of what it wants to be, it is always morphing, but we try our best to have the direction steered by the vote of the people. If a "capitalistic nigger loving regime" is what the majority vote for, then that is what democracy demands.
As for Snowden... that's a mess. The modern US government has always been running this covert bullshit behind the US public's back because higher ups operate under the idea that they are protecting our democratic society by operating outside the principles of one.
