When I was a recruit and we given leave, we were told by our CO's to "never walk around town alone, always go in groups of at least 3 or more". when we asked why, they said it's because the locals hate the military, and it's common to get jumped in town. We came back from leave, and the next day our Cpl. had a black eye and busted nose. Turned out he got beat up that night at the pub.

Because the vast majority of military here act like fuck wits, and during basic at kapooka, they pretty much tried to make us hate civilians. They would even have organise for civilian contractors to come in and bark orders at us, or try to start fights/arguments. The NCO's and CO's all thought it was hilarious, but it pissed off a lot of recruits. This happened to my platoon quite a lot, and by the end of basic, half the platoon wanted to smash anyone who wasn't military.
Then when we got out into the real world, we would all go out into town as a group, get drunk together, and then the resentment for civies would be build into drunken anger. Townsville is bad for this (I don't know if it's changed), and there was one case where MP's basically did a raid on the night club strip and started rounding up the boys: the boys had planned to go in, and starting at one end of the strip, would btfo of everyone as they slowly moved to the other end.
So it just ends up being a back & forth of hostility. And people in the military aren't exactly the smartest people around.
