Our educational systems are severely fucked in several ways. It's a real shame we aren't doing anything to fix them.
We need to stop teaching math separately from teaching applications of math. For what the worth of an engineering graduate student's perspective is, teaching upper HS or college level math without demonstrating the application of that math renders it worthless to the vast majority of the population. I would rather HS forgo calculus or algebra II altogether and provide a year's worth of statistics instruction for people not planning on entering a STEM field.
