I have a question for the Americans. I am studying in college here from China and I'm worried about my etiquette.
In China when you are at a gathering with friends or coworkers it is okay to spit when you need to do this if you are outside (I would never spit while I am inside a building). I know that Americans see spitting as an insult, so how can I spit without insulting anybody?
Most times I just put a hand over my mouth and spit to the side. I spit into a place where people do not walk, like the street gutter or a grass. I have still received mean looks from people while I do this. How should I properly spit without insulting any one?

San Franciscan here, I see old Chinese people spitting all the time, it's gross as fuck.
Spit into a tissue if you need to, or even better, just don't spit at all.
